There's no minimum. A $50 Kalshi or Polymarket profit is taxable income and belongs on your return, if you're filing one. The $600, $2,000 and $10 figures you've heard about only decide whether a payer sends a form. In practice, a small profit may not produce any tax because your income is under the filing threshold or your deductions absorb it, but that's different from the win being tax-free.

OddsFile is software, not tax advice. The IRS has not issued guidance on how prediction-market contracts are taxed. This article explains the options and the sources behind them; a tax professional can tell you which position fits your situation.

The numbers people confuse

Number What it is Does it make income tax-free below it?
$10 Form 1099-INT threshold for interest No
$600 Old 1099-MISC threshold, for payments through 2025 No
$2,000 1099-MISC threshold for payments in 2026 No
$2,000 W-2G threshold for most gambling winnings in 2026 No
$400 Self-employment net earnings threshold Only for SE tax
$1,000 Estimated tax trigger No, it's about timing
$16,100 2026 standard deduction, single No, but it can reduce tax to zero

Thresholds decide forms, not taxability

The IRS is explicit on this for interest: you must report all taxable interest even if you don't receive a form. It's the same with gambling: Topic 419 treats gambling income as includible. Under general tax law, all income is taxable unless excluded, and Section 61 has no minimum.

So "I made under $600" isn't a reason to leave it off. See also does Polymarket send a 1099?

When a small profit means no tax

Your deductions can absorb income. Here are three people, each with a $500 net Kalshi profit in 2026, using capital or other-income treatment:

Person Other income Taxable income Tax on the $500
Student with $4,000 of wages $4,000 $0 $0
Part-timer with $18,000 of wages $18,000 $2,400 About $50
Worker with $80,000 of wages $80,000 $64,400 About $110

The student owes nothing here because $4,500 is under the standard deduction, although a dependent has a smaller standard deduction, so check that. The others are taxed from the first dollar of profit, at their marginal rate.

Do you need to file at all?

If prediction markets are your only income, and it's below the filing threshold, you may not have to file. IRS filing rules depend on status, age and income. Note a few catches:

  • Self-employment. Net earnings of $400 or more trigger a filing need.
  • Gross figures. Under gambling treatment, gross winnings count, which can exceed your net profit by a lot.
  • Digital assets. You may still want to file, to record losses or claim a refund.

The gambling exception

Under gambling treatment, a small net profit can still become a large taxable number. Say you win $3,000 across some markets and lose $2,800 across others. Your net is $200, but if you use gambling treatment and take the standard deduction, $3,000 of winnings goes into income, with no deduction. For someone in the 22% bracket, that's $660 of tax on a $200 profit. See gambling vs capital gains.

Losses

A loss works the other way. If you lost $200, you owe nothing on it, and under capital treatment you may deduct it. There's no minimum to report a loss either, and a small one can still offset gains.

Small wins add up

A common error is to assume each win must pass a threshold. Thresholds, where they exist, look at annual totals. And taxes follow your year's total result, not each trade. Fifty wins of $20 is $1,000 of winnings, even if no single win is large.

What about states?

States have their own rules, and some have no income tax at all. Massachusetts, New York and Illinois handle gambling very differently. Check your state, but don't expect a small-win exemption.

What to do with a small result

  1. Pull your annual number.
  2. If you're filing a return anyway, include it.
  3. If you traded on-chain, answer the digital asset question honestly.
  4. Keep a basic record in case anyone asks.

FAQ

Do I have to report $50 of Kalshi profit?

If you file a return, yes. Income has no minimum.

Is the first $600 tax-free?

No. That was only ever a form threshold, and it's now $2,000 for many 2026 payments.

Will the IRS notice a small amount?

That's the wrong test. Report accurately regardless of size.

If I don't get a 1099, do I owe nothing?

No. A missing form doesn't change what you owe. See Kalshi taxes and the 1099.
