What OddsFile does for Canada

Adjusted cost base, not FIFO

Identical properties are pooled at average cost, as the CRA requires. Each disposition takes its ACB from the pool at the time.

Superficial losses flagged

A loss where the same contract or token was bought within 30 days before or after, and still held 30 days later, is flagged for review with the replacement shown.

Bank of Canada rates

Every trade, settlement and funding payment converts at the Bank of Canada daily average USD/CAD rate for its date. The CRA accepts these rates.

Every possible treatment, on your numbers

  • Capital gains (50% inclusion)

Half the net gain is taxable; net capital losses only offset capital gains.

  • Business income (100%)

Frequent, organised trading can be a business: the full profit is income, and losses offset other income.

  • Gambling (not taxable)

Casual betting wins are not income (Folio S3-F9-C1). The least certain view for event contracts and perps.

Deadline

April 30

FAQ

Canada questions

Does the CRA tax Polymarket or Hyperliquid gains?

The CRA has not published guidance on prediction markets or crypto perps. Gains are most likely capital gains or business income; the gambling view is possible but uncertain. OddsFile computes each on your numbers so you can decide with an adviser.

Which exchange rate should I use?

The CRA accepts the Bank of Canada exchange rate in effect on the day of each transaction. OddsFile uses the Bank of Canada daily average rate, and the previous business day on weekends and holidays.

Are superficial losses removed automatically?

No. They are flagged with the replacement purchase so you can review them. A denied loss is added to the ACB of the replacement property rather than lost.

Is this tax advice?

No. OddsFile is software, not tax advice. Confirm your treatment with a Canadian tax professional.
